If you live in a major city like I do, there could be thousands of dealers with every one of them touting the same message, “we’ll treat you better” or “we’ve got a better selection” or the old adage, “we sell for less”! Well, who do you believe? I’ve found that the best way to find a good dealership is to ask your friends where they bought their car. Car dealers are basically all the same. For the most part, they all carry a pretty good selection (if they have an average sized lot of say, 60 or more cars) and they all have their cars priced roughly at market value and are willing to deal on those prices. So, if all dealers are pretty much the same, how do you determine which one to shop at? It’s all about customer service. The big question is which dealer can give you the best service after the sale. And, the easiest way to find out, is to ask your friends and family. Just about every person these days owns a car. Someone you know, or someone you know knows somebody else that has bought a car at a dealership. Just start asking! People like to talk about their cars (at least most people do). Ask people if the dealership treated them right and if they’ve had any car problems. Most people will be pretty honest when it comes to how they’ve been treated. And when you hear a horror story of how it went badly at a dealer, sock that info away and remember not to shop there. Think about how you’ve been treated in the past. Anywhere! The sales rep at the TV store? The clerk at the convenience store? When people don’t get treated right, they usually don’t go back. And, they also tell others not to shop there. The best information and advertising comes from word of mouth. People like to talk about other people. Am I right?
